Review

This is a great book that helps balance nutrition and flavor for any athlete. Tired of eating the same meals all the time? Get this book! It will give you ideas of ways to cook meals that meet your dietary needs and are healthy for you.  There are some
wonderful ideas for both training and recovery meals that have

taken me out of my simple pasta dinner rut. While there are some ingredients in the recipes that are a little hard to find, most recipes use items from your pantry. For the most part, the recipes have been easy to prepare and taste great. I think it’s a great addition to a athlete’s kitchen!

    Trivial Puruits

Trivial Pursuits: Why Your Real Life is More than Media, Money, and the Pursuit of HappinessTrivial Pursuits
    By Ian Diorio
    Baker Books
    Retail Price $14.99
    Amazon Price: $11.24

    Book Description:

Your life is not a reality show. It’s actual reality. But too many of us spend our lives on trivial pursuits–media, money, perpetual youth, and a culture of constant entertainment. We try to avoid the realities of pain, depression, loneliness, and mortality by filling our lives with diversions. Even worse, our churches that might use the reality of pain and suffering to point us to the cross instead dress the gospel up in the world’s clothing so that it will seem more “relevant.”

With pinpoint accuracy, LA club DJ turned pastor Ian DiOrio diagnoses the problem and gives us the cure. Exposing our most common empty attempts to find meaning apart from God, DiOrio points us back to God and exhorts us to find meaning in our identities as followers of Christ, as shapers of culture, and as people who participate in communities of worship.

    Review

This book is really a call to a deeper faith.  The author helps us to see that we often spend much of our time chasing after what really doesn’t matter.  Today’s culture lures us away from godly pursuits and side tracks us from what is really important.  And what is important is not money, success, or status, but serving God and others.  This was an inspirational read.

      I Like Giving

I Like Giving: The Transforming Power of a Generous LifeI Like Giving
      By Brad Formsma
      Waterbrook
      Retail Price $14.99
      Amazon Price: $11.26

      Book Description:

When you choose to live a generous life, you start to change and so does the world around you. Something incredible happens when giving becomes your own idea, not something you do out of duty or obligation.

When you move from awareness to action, miracles happen. As you make giving a lifestyle, you’ll realize you’re not only loving life more, you’re also creating a more generous world— a better world for all of us.

Rich with inspiring stories and practical suggestions, I Like Giving helps you create a lifestyle of generosity. Inside you’ll find:

      • Giving—something you get to do, not something you’ve got to do.
      • How to raise kids with a sensitivity to others’ needs.
      • You don’t have to be a millionaire to make a difference.
      • Practical ideas for giving to people around you every day.

I Like Giving is about experiencing the joy of giving. We all have something to give. Giving goes way beyond money or things. It can be a listening ear, a touch, or simply the gift of time. Giving is living.

      Review

I would characterize myself as a giver.  I tend to look out for others and it gives me great joy to give to others.  I’ve raised my kids to have the same love of giving with varying success.  Some “took” to it more that others, which leads me to believe that temperament has something to do with it.  So when I saw this book, I just had to read it.  I love how the author uses so many different stories to convey the message of generosity for people of all ages. I also appreciate that some of the stories don’t require spending a single dollar; they just encourage you to pay attention and to act. I have shared many of the ideas in my own family, who are now adults themselves and with my grandkids. This book is a quick and easy read and will change your attitude towards living a generous life and it is inspirational.

This book has everything you need to know to develop a successful strength training program without spending a fortune on equipment or a personal trainer. I am not an exercise nut. I am a professional man and spend my spare time with my family. I just don’t have a lot of time to devote to working out.   I was looking for a practical book that I could use to improve the weights workout I had been doing for several months, but would allow me to spend no more than an hour or so in the gym every day. This book delivered and revolutionized my routine.

It’s about turning smart habits into second nature.

When it comes to achieving healthy, continued weight loss, the smallest adjustments often make the biggest impact. The key is mastering one new habit before expecting yourself to tackle another. Keri breaks each of the plan’s ten easy steps into even smaller, more manageable solutions. The best part is that you decide what to focus on and when you’re ready to move on. Take your time! Once you’ve made all ten changes, you’ll be healthier and thinner—for good!

            Review

I refuse to do the goofy “no carb” and “no fat” diets, because they just aren’t sustainable. I don’t want to live that way! BUT, I have finally had my “aha” moment when I realized that I simply can’t eat like a 20 yr old anymore. I have to eat LESS carbs, healthier fats, and a lot less junk. This is where The Small Change Diet comes in.  This book is full of common sense, good advice, and motivational tips on how to improve diet and lifestyle by making small changes that have a big impact over time.  I will refer to it often. Sometimes you just need a good coach to help you remember WHY you want to live a healthier lifestyle.  This is the resource you want to keep handy!
